Learning & Teaching
At St Joseph’s, our commitment to the Catholic vision for learning guides us in nurturing the development of the whole child, spiritually, intellectually, socially, and emotionally, within a faith-filled, supportive, and inclusive community. We believe that every learner is capable and valued, created in the image of God, and deserving of rich and engaging educational experiences. We aim to foster confident communicators, critical thinkers, and mathematically engaged learners, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in all aspects of life.
Religious Education
Faith is at the heart of all we do. We believe that faith formation is a lifelong journey, nurtured through family, parish, and the daily life of our school community. Religious Education at St Joseph’s invites students not only to learn about the Catholic faith but to live it through compassion, service, and love. While we are a Catholic school, we warmly welcome and respect families of all faiths, supporting each child on their individual spiritual journey. Through prayer, scripture, sacraments, and liturgical celebrations, students grow in their relationship with God and become active, faith-filled members of the Church. We regularly bring Jesus’ teachings to life through meaningful social justice projects and community outreach, encouraging students to act with kindness, inclusion, and Gospel values every day. Supported by our parish, families, and staff, students prepare for and celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation with reverence and joy.

Literacy
We believe that the ability to speak, listen, read, and write with confidence and purpose is essential for every child’s success. Guided by the Victorian Curriculum and the MACS Vision for Instruction, our English program is grounded in evidence-based practice and the Science of Reading. We use a Structured Literacy approach that explicitly teaches oral language, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This approach builds strong foundations for reading and writing by helping students decode and understand language, use grammar effectively, and make meaning from texts. More than a set of skills, literacy at St Joseph’s is seen as a powerful tool for thinking, communicating, and connecting. Through explicit and engaging instruction, we aim to foster a lifelong love of language and empower students to use their voices with confidence and purpose.
Numeracy
At St Joseph’s, our Mathematics program is designed to be rich, engaging, and responsive to the diverse needs of all learners. Guided by the Victorian Curriculum and aligned with the MACS Vision for Instruction, we take an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning. Using the Research-Based Principles of Instruction identified by Barak Rosenshine, teachers explicitly model concepts, guide practice, and support students to apply their learning independently through the “I do, We do, You do” model. Daily review sessions reinforce key concepts and build fluency, ensuring long-term retention and confidence. Our program focuses on the key curriculum areas of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, and Statistics and Probability, while developing the mathematical proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning. By connecting mathematics to real-world contexts, we empower students to approach challenges with curiosity, persistence, and creativity, seeing themselves as capable and confident problem solvers.

Inquiry
Inquiry learning at our school brings the Victorian Curriculum to life by connecting Science, Civics and Citizenship, Geography, and the Capabilities into rich, meaningful topics. Each unit is guided by a big question that encourages curiosity and critical thinking, while also providing students with the essential content knowledge they need. From there, students are encouraged to branch out into project work or investigations based on their own interests, allowing for creativity, choice, and deeper learning. Through this approach, students not only develop knowledge and skills across subject areas but also learn how to question, explore, and engage with the world around them as active and thoughtful citizens.
Digital Technologies
Digital technologies are an important part of learning at our school. Students use Chromebooks in the classroom to support their learning across all subject areas, engaging with a wide range of programs and platforms that enhance creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. In line with the Victorian Curriculum, our approach to digital technologies helps students develop the skills to be safe, responsible, and innovative users of technology. Whether they are researching, collaborating on projects, or presenting their ideas in new and exciting ways, students gain the confidence to use digital tools that will support their learning now and into the future.

Learning Adjustments
St Joseph’s Boronia are proudly committed to an inclusive learning environment where every student is valued, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed. Guided by the principles of equity and belonging, our Learning Diversity Team works alongside teachers, leaders, and families to ensure that all learners, whether they require additional support or extension, can access and thrive in their learning. Through differentiated teaching, personalised learning plans, and regular Program Support Group meetings, we tailor their education to meet each student’s unique strengths and needs. Our comprehensive support structure includes social skills groups, literacy and numeracy intervention, speech and language programs, and enrichment opportunities for gifted learners. Collaborating with allied health professionals and Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) specialists, we provide targeted and evidence-based support from enrolment through to Year 6 transitions to High School, ensuring every child is empowered to grow, achieve, and flourish as a valued member of our school community.
Auslan
Our St Joseph’s students learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language) with a specialist teacher, embracing the language of Australia’s Deaf community and fostering inclusive communication across the school. Auslan is woven into daily life, from signing the National Anthem at assemblies to using signs in classroom activities, helping all students express their feelings and needs non-verbally. Lessons combine explicit instruction with engaging activities such as games, stories, songs, and group practice, developing both expressive and receptive skills while emphasising facial expressions, body language, and non-voicing skills. Students also explore Deaf culture and key linguistic features such as Handshape, Orientation, Location, and Movement (HOLM), with opportunities to connect with members of the Deaf community through interactive incursions. Through learning Auslan, our students develop empathy, awareness, and a deeper appreciation of communication in all its forms.

Art
The Visual Arts program is designed to encourage and challenge students to achieve their artistic potential in an enjoyable and supportive environment.
Students develop their creativity and imagination, as well as refine their practical and fine motor skills. They learn to make choices when experimenting with materials, tools and techniques and processes.
Students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of different art mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, clay, sculpture, construction and textiles. They learn to communicate through their art, respond to the artworks of others and gain appreciation from well-known artists and art styles.
The students’ artworks are celebrated and displayed around the school as well as in our bi-annual whole school Art Show.
STEM
The students of St Joseph’s engage in a dedicated weekly STEM lesson that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through hands-on, real-world problem solving. Using a collaborative design process, students explore problems, develop and test prototypes, modify solutions, and reflect on their work, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and resilience. Our STEM program incorporates a wide range of technologies, including Chromebooks, iPads, and robotics, allowing students to design, code, construct, and innovate. This integrated approach equips students with essential skills and knowledge for the future, preparing them to confidently apply STEM thinking in their learning, future careers, and everyday lives.

Physical Education
Physical Education plays a vital role in fostering healthy, active lifestyles while supporting students’ physical, social, and emotional development. Our weekly program focuses on movement, fitness, skill-building, cooperation, and sportsmanship through a wide range of activities, including team games, movement-based challenges, and specialised programs such as the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) for our youngest learners. Students also enjoy annual highlights like the School Sports Carnival, inter-school competitions, and opportunities in athletics, swimming, tennis, soccer, and orienteering, supported by community sporting groups and expert coaching. These experiences build physical confidence, teamwork, resilience, and water safety skills, inspiring a lifelong love of activity and healthy living.
Library
St Joseph’s Library is a vibrant hub that inspires a love of reading and learning for all students. Visiting weekly, students explore a rich collection of books, fostering curiosity, imagination, and strong literacy skills. Our library celebrates the joy of stories through events such as Book Week, showcasing outstanding authors and illustrators, and National Simultaneous Storytime, where students join peers across Australia in a shared reading experience. With personalised support and guidance, our library empowers students to discover books that ignite their passion for reading, sparking creativity and lifelong learning.

Performing Arts
Our biennial Performing Arts program is a highlight of our school community, offering every student the opportunity to shine on and off the stage. Led by professional teachers and grounded in the Victorian Curriculum, the program inspires creativity, confidence, and collaboration through drama, dance, and music. Every child is given an equal chance to perform and contribute—whether through acting, choreography, or script writing—ensuring their voices are celebrated and valued. The process fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and self-expression, culminating in unforgettable performances that bring the whole school together. Beyond the stage, our Performing Arts program nurtures lifelong skills, joy, and pride that extend far beyond the spotlight.
The Kitchen Garden
The Kitchen Garden program at St Joseph’s provides students with engaging, multi-sensory environmental learning experiences that connect them deeply to the natural world. Students explore practical ways of living sustainably, learning skills such as propagating, planting, harvesting, seed collecting, composting, and worm farming. The Nagle Contemporary Learning Centre (NCLC) enhances this program with a fully equipped kitchen and dining area where students prepare, cook, and sample fresh produce from the garden. They learn safe and hygienic food preparation, explore new flavours, and develop table etiquette. Beyond these skills, the program fosters curiosity, teamwork, and an appreciation for healthy living, while our inspiring environment gives students unique opportunities to connect with nature, nurture creativity, and develop lifelong habits of care for the environment and each other.
